Job Search Techniques

Let's assume you've defined what career interests you and that you have a realistic view of the current job market. (The Labor Deparement reported today that 240,000 people lost their jobs in October, making our new unemployment rate 6.5 percent.)
While you should be proud of achieving your college degree, it in no way guarantees you a job. YOU must actively search for opportunities and leads.
Three tips:
1. Get Smart. Don't try to keep track of everything in your head. Get a notebook or start a folder in your "My Docs" and put all of your "Job Search" docs in it. That means keeping track of WHERE you applied, WHEN you applied, and for WHAT POSITION. Keep copies of all resumes and cover letters sent. Make a page for notes for every phone conversation (Telephone Interviews, Conversations with Contacts, etc) with dates and names.
2. Get Organized. Don't let disorganization cause you to miss interviews, career fairs, etc. Get a DAYPLANNER. Want a free one? Come see us in BA 2, Room 222. Get a professional email and put a professional message on your cell.
3. Get Networking. Start connecting with UCF alumni through our Facebok Page (UCF College of Business Network). Do NOT approach an alumnus with "Hey, I am moving to Miami. Can you help me get a job there?" Networking is NOT about asking others to help you get jobs. It's about making contacts to generate leads, learn more about a company/industry, and gaining a better idea of how you can position yourself as a qualified and desirable candidate. Come and see us during walk-ins for help, Tue & Thurs 10:30 - 3:30 in BA 2, Room 222.
